Personal Reflection (Assessment #6)
Reflecting back to the beginning of this fall semester, I am amazed to see how much I learned about the writing process in this English course. After practicing hard on a lot of writing such as my four essays, forty journals, rhetorical analysis, and personal reflections my writing has gotten much better then before I started this class. Comparing my first essay to my last essay, I noticed steady improvement in the structure of my essays including adding logos.
According to the feedback I got from peer reviews particularly for my first essay, I did an excellent job on including ethos and pathos, which is corresponding perfectly with my own evaluation. Learning about rhetorical appeals, ethos, pathos and logos in our first unit, was very beneficial throughout the whole entire writing process of all the essays one to four. I understood these concepts from the first unit, having ethos and pathos continually emphasized in my essays. Most of my essays have pretty good motivator like a rhetorical question or a short story that gets the readers attention. In essay three I did a good job on identifying rhetorical techniques of the author. In my last two essays I included the types of reasoning I learned about either inductive or deductive and the logical fallacies.
Throughout my essays there are a few things that I still need to work on to make it better. One thing I have to improve is the use of commas and spelling. Although I have most of the elements required in the essays the part I need to improve is to make the thesis that reflects the point of my paper more clear for the audience. The aspect that I would have improved if I had more time is the organizational structure of my essays and the rhetorical situation cover page for the last essay that will make it better.
Furthermore I learned that writing has to be addressed from the first or third point of view not the second. I actually got this message while having my paper checked in the writing center. The teacher that was volunteering at that time said that teachers do not like papers written in second person. When I got the comments on essay #2 it was just confirmed what I was told in the writing center. This is one detail I will not forget. Then I learned it is important to include in my thesis whatever I will be talking about in my paper and make my purpose clear. I notice that writing self-assessment essays are not so difficult as rhetorical analysis essays. The most progress that I’m aware of is not only in writing but also in thinking critically and including logos in my essays. In the beginning I did not get the difference between inductive and deductive reasoning but now it makes sense to me. Consequently I can evaluate more competently different points of views while comparing or contrasting.
In conclusion, thanks to English 101 I am definitely a better writer today. I have a pretty good foundation of knowledge to keep building on in my future classes and throughout my whole life. The writing process is like learning to ride a bike. It may be hard in the beginning but after getting comfortable with it can be a lot of fun. Practicing writing may not make it perfect but it makes it better every time. I put a lot of time and effort in this English class and I’m proud of my work. Since I did my very best I think I deserve a B for sure if not an A
