Brett Whalen's Writing Portfolio

Brett
Learning and growing in this class was an exciting and educational process. I first started this class thinking that it was going to be like every other English class that I have ever taken. But that mindset was quickly changed. Through most of my time in this class I was under the impression that I was failing the class, thus I guess driving me to work harder in order to raise my grade. But overall I have spent more time working in this one English class than I have my entire junior and senior years in high school. In the class there were areas that I did well, areas that needed improvement and things that I have learned while taking this class.

There were several aspects that were successful in my first year composition class. Aspects such as my second essay which I received a grade of 95%. I was also successful in the area of creating outlines in order to assist me in writing essays. I was pleased with the progress of my writing style and habits from the beginning of the semester. I managed to get most of my ideas across to the audience one way or another but in a way that they can understand and comprehend. I also do quite a bit of background research on topics that I am planning to write a paper about. My main source of persuasion in my final essay was one of the most effective I believe, in the fact that they were mostly anecdotes; so that they could all hit close to home to any perspective reader.

As I have been thought this school year, I have been making mistakes that I see a need for improvement. One example that needs improvement is my studying habits; I need to devout more time to reading material and accomplish the smaller assignments rather than just worry about only the larger ones. I understand that I need to get my assignments done as early as I can just in case something else comes up so I won’t be stuck behind, or be rushing at the last minute to get things done.

I have learned quite a bit of things throughout this English 101 class. I need to write an outline for every essay or paper in order to be sure that it is well written. I also leaned quite about the topics of vegan and vegetarianism, hydrogen cars and eminent domain. I found out that I need to get my assignments done as early as I can in order to make sure I have time to do them right.

Overall I believe that this class was a great help in improving my essay and paper writing skills. The major thing that I was impressed by was the results from my work on essay #2, but there is still a need in improvement in the area of studying habits. Also learning extensively about my research topics were some of the reasons why I enjoyed yet dreaded this eng 101 class.
